Goa tourism director Swapnil Naik has opined that the Goa Government should look into the matter, particularly because the movie was extensively shot in the coastal state. “Movie buffs consider movies as true depiction whether it is based on fiction or true stories. Movies based on sensitive issues should be properly scanned and viewed before its release,” he said.

Naik said that since Dum Maro Dum is based on Goa’s underbelly and may show Goa negatively. He said Goa government should ensure that the movie is not an exaggerated portrayal. The tourism industry fears that the movie which revolves around drug nexus, sex, beach life and other activities, will impede Goa’s tourism.“The movie’s objectionable parts should be censored. We cannot afford to take any more bad publicity when the State is trying to overcome the past. We cannot afford to lose our visitors coming from all over the world at the cost of this movie,” Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) president Ralph D’Souza said.

The movie starring Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukon, Bipasha Basu and Aditya Pancholi was extensively shot in Goa last year.TTAG, a body representing hospitality and travel sector in Goa has been facing tough competition from other tourist destinations like Thailand, Malaysia and Srilanka and also places from within the country.“Incidents of drugs, rapes are touted internationally but the good about Goa is never highlighted. After a couple of criminal cases against few foreigners, people considered Goa as an unsafe tourist destination, which is absolutely not the case. Goa is a much safer hub for Goans and its guests here,” an official said.

The apprehensive Goa police on Tuesday asked DMD director Rohan Sippy to show them the promotional and publicity materials of the film before its release. The movie’s official spokesperson from Mumbai said that the movie is based on whatever happened in Goa in the recent past.“We conducted a thorough study before shooting the movie in Goa. Although the request from Goa police came in late, we are ready to show the film’s footage to Goan authorities,” she said adding that the movie trailers have been released in the theatres on Friday.
